It is a natural social behavior for animals to associate with those whom they are most like. It gives a primal sense of belonging and safety...There really is no racial basis to the activity (racial being used as the vernacular for having or showing extreme disdain for those within differing racial, social, or religious groups).

People are just naturally drawn to others who outwardly reflect their own appearance, social status or beliefs...it is after they get around people for an extended period the shallow surface groupings of people is either hardened (by prejudice or ignorance) or broken down by empathy and humanity.

We are social creatures and we are subject (initially) to our hard-wired instincts...whether we like it or not.

People hang out with their own race everywhere they go for many reasons. One would probably be a sense of security and knowing that there are people around him from the same background. Two would be communication..communication wise, i think races would hang out with each other because they might not be able to speak other languages to communicate with other races, therefore associating with their own race once again. Also, if there are only two koreans for example, then they would defiantly tend to hang out with each other knowing that they are the only koreans in that place. I hope i got the point across..

It's comfort.

But, race isn't what will make a person comfortable. I grew up in the suburbs and my friends are a mixed bunch and new ones tend to be as well.

My closest friends: Korean, Jewish, Romanian, Jamaican, White, and Black.

Volleyball and basketball are things I'm comfortable with and that is not race related. I started playing soccer and noticed a different set of friends (more first/second generation Latino, African, Chinese).

It is about comfort, but it's what makes you feel most comfortable. For me, it's not race.

I think thats because they feel secure.

If you go to a new place or country, you dont feel secure and you feel different, bcoz of the languages, culture, etc etc etc....so when you find someone of your race, you can associate easily and be comfortable...dont u think so?

Why would I hang around with a group of people I can't understand what they are saying.
Also certain races like black people have a different attitude around other black people. They seem to act normal if they are surrounded by white people, then some black people show up and they start acting all ghetto and going ape sh*t.

we're still a bit awkward i suppose about the whole race thing. i mean its apparent that some people are still racist and we cant always sniff out who is or isnt. so the best bet would be to not impose and stick where you feel might be safest...

Nice answers, but in reality it usually comes from ignorance. Yes, we are in some ways driven to do that but only in the absence of the knowledge that people are people no matter their outward appearance.

That maybe because they can speak their mother-tongue to them........Most of us are more comfortable speaking in their mother-tongue instead of other languages, you see.....Another reason for that can be that as they share the same tradition, they will be much more comfortable with each other.
