Maybe both. People who are stuck on themselves sometimes do have enough qualities to explain why. But it is still a character flaw, even for someone like Johnny Depp, who has no flaws I can see.

If you are more intelligent than others, it is especially important to learn how to disguise that fact. I know, bragging about what you can do, showing off, all that was encouraged when you were a kid. Everyone wants to promote "self-esteem," but not to go overboard. But what does someone do who realizes they are indeed above-average in some important variable? The most important thing is to recognize that others will not necessarily think it is as good as you do. And not only from envy, but from realizing that there are other variables where you come up short.

Compassion is often the first to suffer when a person realizes they are superior in some way. If you are self-absorbed, whether explainable or not, you cannot have the warmth of human relationships that is possible to those with compassion.

The very best thing for you would be a friend who knows both your superiority and your flaws, and is not too shy to tell you when you grow overbearing. However, if you don't learn a bit of dignity and tact, you may never find such a friend.

Isn't it odd that I have a persisting image of you in a mental hospital ward?

You're probably somewhere around 5 feet tall, with a bad complexion, a bad hair, bad teeth, not much to look at and not in very good shape physically. You're your own best friend and P.R. man! The only thing it seems you may have is an inflated ego and self image! Time for a reality check!

Have a nice day!
