Two ideas I've used so far:
A sudoku puzzle book and a nice mechanical pencil
A can of Tim Hortons coffee (for non-canadians, Tim's is like Starbuck's poor cousin)

Gift cards are ok, but I'm looking for little clever ideas. Example, my brother Richard is getting a personalized mug that says "****".

$10 is the budget I have set for all of the members in my family (except husband & kids) It's nothing to do with being cheap, between my husband and I there are several siblings & their families, 2 sets of parents/step parents (both of our parents are divorced & remarried) granparents and nieces, nephews and great-nieces we buy for. It gets expensive!

I tailor my gifts to fit the recipient and have given this year:
a scrapbook album
book about Feng Shui
Indian cuisine cookbook
italian charms
picture frames
earrings
gift baskets I made up of lotion, candle, bubble bath, spray, a pouf to wash with and some soap- (all bought at the dollar store and looks great)
sweaters & pullovers
coffee and mug set
gourmet mustards for one mustard crazy relative
stir-fry accessory set
like new woodworking books
a special ornament
a woodburning pen
toys & outfits on sale for the kids.

Your ideas are good. Just really try to think about the person and what they like. I would much rather get a $10 gift that was something I enjoyed than a $100 present I didn't care about.

Good luck on finding the perfect thing.

A nice picture frame from a department store. They're quite often on sale this time of year for $10.

Also, you can go to stores websites and look at this weeks circular and see what $20 products they have for $10.

Both of those are good.
I think some CD's go for $10.
Or lottery tickets.
A nice bottle of lotion for a woman or bath gel.
Golf balls, probably only a three pack, and some tees.
A tee shirt with a funny saying on it
Stationery
A plant
A photo album
Picture frame
stuffed animal
flashlight
I could go on and on and on. I work retail and I see lots of junk!

I know the perfect solution if you are just starting with woodworking and also if you have already experience with it. I reccomend to give a look to this website ( woodworkingplans.kyma.info ) You can find a lot of woodworking plans and you will be able to manage the projects with a CAD/DWG software. It allows you to modify the projects and to alter the arragements. If you are a beginner this is the easiest way to start, it's the best approach to woodworking; and if you already have experience you will find a lot of ideas and inspirations to improve your abilities with woodwork. I'm sure that you will love it!

Gift card or potpourri warmer. I don't know if you have a Dollar General but they have potpourri warmers for $5. That way you get to spend the other $5 on yourself.
