Sometimes that works out, but I would stick with the classic fully assisted semi-manual hydrolic anti-propelling system...a hand brake is just too primitive for a canoe.

in still water yes if you want to, but obviously it wont work in a river or stream cause the moving water will push you along rather then slow yo down or keep you stationary
