What did you want to be when you grew up? Why? And did you succeed, if so, is it what you thought it would be, if not; are you glad or how do you feel?
I wanted to be a teacher, but motherhood stepped in first, which was great. I plan on getting my degree when my last child begins school.
I am just curious.

wow! what a response! Everyone has really neat answers. It is nice to know I was not the only one who chose family first. Makes me feel better. Love the answer about how we are already teachers, worded very well!

Hey, same here- I thought about teaching, and had babies instead. Guess what? We still get to be teachers, only without a degree but with results we can see for a lifetime. A mother is the most important teacher a child will ever have! :)

Over the years I've wanted to be a nurse, a vet, a care worker, a psychologist, a counsellor or a teacher. I realised that I wasn't quite clever enough to be a vet gain mere B's in my A levels when I needed As. I did Psychology at University and realised there were very few opportunities within Psychology without further study which I didn't want to do! I was in lots of student debt and tired of not having any money and life revolving around the next exam! I realised again that all the other options would require further study and paid poorly. So in the end I settled for working as a Recruitment Consultant! Now my ambition is life is to do whatever keeps the money coming in so I can keep paying the mortgage and have a convertible sports car by the time I'm 30!

When I was really young, I wanted to be an actress and singer. Then in middle school and high school I wanted to go into forensics or criminal psychology but realized that the colleges in my area didn't have majors for that at the time because it was a fairly new field and I couldn't afford to go to a private college far away. Now I'm an administrative assistant. Even though it's not as challenging as say a criminal psychologist, it's a low-paced job and I get pretty good pay so I'm happy. :)

I wanted to be a scientist. But when I worked in a research lab as an assistant I realized it's not for me. I might've liked being a science lecturer, but I didn't have the mojo for grad school - my biological clock was alarming. So now I'm a stay-at-home mom. I'm not ambitious anymore, really - I figure I'll get a little technical training and a nice quiet job in allied health once my kids are in school, and my dream now is to become a craftsperson and sell my work.

i was always a bit of a show off when i was little...always liked to be in plays and on stage and i used to dress up alot when i was a little...when i started listening to music i had this ability to sing along and be in tune just by listening, i have never had a singing lesson in my life, and i really got into music so i decided that i wanted to be a singer...famous or not, that's what i wanted to be....now i am a professional singer and have been for the past 10 years, i entered a singing contest one night and i won £1,000, so what i did was i used that money to set myself up with backing tapes, music equipment and a driving license, i have never looked back...i only went to the pub to see my bro so i could lend some money off him and he suggested that i entered the competition, if he had not have said that, lord knows what i would be doing today...i didnt have money back then but when i won that grand i thought i'd won the big one, so thanks to my bro i am here today to tell the tale...i love it, and i still love that attention, i did'nt plan my future until my children grew bigger, but deep down i knew that i would get that dream one day....now i am living the dream...i still work as a singer even at the ripe old age of 43, i can still knock out a good tune....i still like to be out there entertaining people and i love to see them enjoying themselves, it gives me self satisfaction knowing that i can give everyone a good night out and keep them smiling....i don't think i would be able to do any other job now...my middle son has the gift also...he's very good at singing and has joined me in 2 gigs and it went down a treat...which was awesome...so yes i fulfilled my life long dream and i hope that i can continue in my old age...

A pilot at 10, any rich man at 15, Ron Jeremy at 17, A politician at 20, now I just want to own my own place and be the nice guy next door.
Changing times, don't want to think what I want to be 50 years from now. Just living the day.

I wanted to be a spy, or a private investigator, or a forensics expert, or a fighter pilot, or an actress.... but then I realised I'm not so good with science and my dad didn't want to pay for my drama lessons. I went and studied journalism & languages instead!! I think it's great that you want to get your degree. I did my drama lessons part time and was so proud of myself.
Good luck, and enjoy!

I'd always planned to join the army, but like you motherhood got in the way.
I still think about it sometimes. could have travelled the world a couple of times over by now!
No regrets though!
