It is if you put the work into finding the right gift. Then the act of giving is a completion of that will, and the self-overcoming in relinquishing the object gives pleasure in itself, for the higher has vanquished the lower.

A good that is received is only occasionally "just right", and one frequently feels that the giver has put an obligation onto you; this is one reason why one has to give without obligation. Even then, the giver has had to work on themselves, which will bring long-term happiness; the gift itself will have value according to what it actually is, but receiving it itself is a temporary pleasure.

Sometimes the intrisic value of the gift can outweigh the benefit of giving it, though: my greatest gift was a copy of the I Ching; the recipient has found it invaluable. Even if one is weary of the book as a tool of divination, it contains much wisdom.

much better to give than receive. the thrill of watching others open their gift with anticipation and not wondering what " goodies " they will receive. then to see their faces light up with joy when the gift is revealed. there is nothing like the pleasure of making someone else happy -- at least in my opinion

This time-tested PROVERB CAN'T go wrong. When you give, you have the power! When you are merely on the receiving end, you have no choice!

Jesus directed us to, "give until it hurts." He does not mention the need to receive.
