Without discipline a person is ruled by whatever impulse they are feeling at the moment. Without discipline a person can't overcome the present enough to work and plan for their future. Sometimes external discipline is necessary, but hopefully self-discipline can be taught and learned. Discipline is one of the differences between immaturity and maturity.

Discipline sets boundaries and borders of what is and is not acceptable to one self, discipline also sets a routine like going to work on time everyday. Discipline gets you where you want to be without it you would not get very far.

Discipline is important because without it everything would be out of whack and life would be like one big animal house. People would have no respect and just wouldn't care about anything.

It is necessary to avoid chaos
Without the rules and restrictions the society would not be able to function. Some limitations to personal freedom are absolutely essential. If there was no discipline, there would not be any difference between the right and wrong. On one hand it would be good, as there would be no rules to brake and no punishment. On the other hand, however, there also would not be any reward for sticking to the rules.

I am told that is to create boundaries so that we can feel safe knowing where we can go, what we can do, how to organise ourselves within the structure created by rules.
I, personally, hate discipline and rules. I find them extremely restrictive, not only in every day life but especially to my mind. I do not need rules or fences to keep me under control, I am quite capable of controlling myself. The only thing discipline has done for me in the past is to cause me to rebel. Rules and discipline are there for those who are unable to know the difference between right and wrong, unfortunately, we all have to live by rules thanks to these people.

It's like sharpening an axe.
If you expect your knife to cut, you should spend time sharpening it. Abraham Lincoln said, "If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I would spend four sharpening my axe."
If you expect your axe to last a long time, you should spend time sharpening it, to keep the rust off and to keep the edge smooth (which also adds length to the life of the axe).
In life, discipline sharpens our minds so that we can think clearly and think well. We "last longer" because we know what we're doing is the correct method, even if it takes longer than "quick fixes".
Discipline, diligence and hard work are the pillars of success.

If you're talking about childre, it's because they actually want limits set on them for protection and to establish boundaries.
With adults, self-discipline is important to be successful in anything you do in life.
