Why has union membership declined in the U.S. since 1955?

Unions were created because of abusive labor practices. Currently most labor practices are governed by the Federal and State governments.

Labor Unions require employees to pay membership dues. Government regulations have made it less necessary to pay dues for rights that people already have.
