I like "OM", because it seems to exorcise all the demons out of me, and it always leaves me renewed, invigorated and inspired to be peaceful and to create (I write, compose, paint, etc.).

I'd be open to other (non-jazz) music as well, such as John Cage, etc. I don't know much about real, vintage jazz or the experimentalists, so feel free to suggest whatever seems appropriate.

What would be some musicians and pieces for me to check out?

Thanks!

Some albums that are similar in the way that there is a lot of extreme playing and a unconcern with song structure and melody, very loud music...

Peter Brotzman-Fu*k De Bore
Ornette Coleman-free Jazz
Archie Schepp

Great experimental albums that are somewhat grounded in song structures and melody...

Wayne Shorter-The All Seeing Eye
Eric Dolphy-Out There
Andrew Hill-Eternal Spirit
John Ellis-By A thread
Charles Mingus-The Great Concert of Charles Mingus

Plus some more of my personal favorites that are most like musical alchemy...

Grateful Dead! Try streaming music from http://www.archive.org/details/GratefulDead. They have lots of great sounding concerts by the Grateful Dead. the music in the 2nd set of their concerts is the best Here are y suggestions for regarding yeas and songs...

1973-1974-Try a concert with the songs Dark Star, Morning Dew , or Weather Report Suite. Feb. 22 or 24 1974 is really great.

May 8 1977 or any show in May1977 with the songs Scarlet Begonias, Fire on the Mountain, or Estimated Prophet.

1989-1991 Any show with songs Playin' in the Band, Help of the Way, Slipknot!, Franklin's Tower, or Dark Star.

Pink Floyd's album called Animals iscompletely amazing, you must hear that album.

John Ellis' album called Roots Leaves and Branches is a modern day classic, you really should hear it.

Roland Kirk's album called the Inflated Tear is another great.

Of course everything by John and Alice Coltrane is great.

I hope you try some of this music. If you would like more help, you can e mail me or post a similar question with the word "jazz" in it and I'll probably see it and answer. Happy listening.
