Hopefully in the near future I will get a chance to visit Ireland and Scotland. What would the locals say about an American wearing a kilt? Would they be saying, another god damn American trying to Irish or Scottish. Since it would be a non traditional kilt i.e. made out of leather or blue jeans like the kilts at utlikilts.com sells and not tartan. Or would you not even bat an eyelash at it?

It's not to create a scene. They are just really comfortble. They have this one called the spartan that is made out of the same stuff as boxing robes. These kilts are made with pockets so they are really multipurpose.

If you were just walking down the street, people probably wouldn't think very much about it. I think there might be some sniggering behind their hands if they knew you were an American wearing a leather kilt. Nothing abusive though. They'd just think it was a little odd.

I'd find it a little off-putting...the kilt is a traditional garment used to distinguish between the families of Scotland/Ireland, so one made of denim or leather rather than tartan would seem to me rather in-your-face and rude. Maybe others would find it funnier than I would, though. I can see how under the right circumstances, it might be amusing, but not in general.

it depends on your reason for wearing the kilt. if it's to create a scene, grow up! if it's a cultural statement, go for it.
