People like to live with people like themselves. This is why you get areas where a large proportion of inhabitants are from the same ethnicities. In such areas there will usually be a main shopping area where people buy and sell goods that would normally be found in their parent countries. This is why you get areas in large metropolitan cities such as 'china town, little Italy and these days in the UK a mini Pakistan and Africa. As for your ghetto comment, this is due to 'urban sprawl,' people from the inner cities will move outward to the suburbs when they can afford it, leaving behind people who are less well off. This is a natural phenomena which is attributed to the human species.

Why do you think that only 'Blacks' and 'Asians' can answer your question? I am neither but I am educated enough to know that when any ethnic group migrates to anywhere where they are in a minority, it is a natural instinct to want to stay in an area where you are accepted and most comfortable. It would be the same if you emigrated - you would want to live in an area where there were people who you felt were similar to you.

In any case, when there was mass immigration at the time when West Indian people came to this country, for example, they were PUT in those places altogether so they have naturally just carried on living there and their children live there and so on. Anyway, why would any one of those families want to move any distance from all they've ever known into a neighbourhood where they may feel that they are not accepted when they can stay near to their friends and relatives. I know what I would do.

Well I'm Black and I don't live in the ghetto I think you mean projects. I live in a middle class Black neighborhood. For the record I have never see an Asian ghetto maybe Latino but not Asian. And there are White people that live in the ghetto too, you call them trailer homes, also some live in the projects. In Chicago there is a project called the backwoods and mostly Polish people live there. I don't know where you live but I know every few Black people that live in projects, but most all White neighborhoods are too expensive and some of these neighborhoods are VERY racist.

I'm neither Black nor Asian. Its worse than that. I'm Irish and living in England. But I have an answer for you that the ghetto dwellers will not be able to give you. Because they don't know the answer.

Actually, there are plenty of Blacks and Asians who intergate in mainstream American society. Those that do stay in de facto segregated neighborhoods is because social and economic pressures forced them to live in those areas. It's not as bad as it used to be, but racial prejudices still exist. Unless exceptionally talented, there is little to no chance for a non-White to have the highest coporate position which is traditionally White. There are plenty of White communities...some narrowed down to Italians, Germans, etc. The only reason why you are picking on Blacks and Asians is because they look different. Maybe YOU should reach out to these minorities if you really want them to intergrate into the rest of society.

People do seem to be more comfortable living with others who are culturally similar. That's why I prefer to live as near as possible to the centre of London, where the mixture is more diverse.

Nana, you are truly ignorant. You don't know where the questioner lives and you don't care. You assume that the whole world is American like you. Now that IS prejudice.

any so called council estate will have many families with what are called Social Problems. Councils house all types of people but those who are poorer tend to wind up on council estates. Do you regard these as ghetto's for the under privileged.

Wealthy Asians such as doctors etc do integrate but because of the Asian community's fear of persecution ( paki bashing etc), they tend to congregate to have safety in numbers.

There are British ex pat communities all over the world, no differences.

Also in Britain, council/housing associations who's stock is run down or in run down areas, find that British people will not want to move into those homes.

Asians and blacks will willingly move into these house.

I think all kinds of people regardless of race usually prefer to stay within their own ghettos as they feel more comfortable. I don't think you should point out only Asians and blacks, as caucasians are the same too when they are in foreign countries. I am Asian and not all but most whites prefer to have their own ghettos here too.

Its a trait with all minority groups, generally, across the world - they tend to stick together primarily for the reason of safety/security. Go to Asia and you shall same ghettos (as you chose to name them) of Whites. However, it definitely is a welcome idea to integrate with rest of the society but it has to be a both-way traffic.

Ghettos are created by society rejecting some groups who are then forced to live together, usually in the worse part of town and the cycle continues.
Let's face it, we are essentially xenophobic.
