Cats are very territorial. They're in your garden because they have left their scent behind. Moth balls have a very strong smell which interferes with a cats ability to detect their scent. It confuses them. They are very inexpensive and work great. I have found that to be the only way to get rid of cats from my garden. Try it.

I sympathise with you.You have a problem on your hands. But I have a solution. Place a litter tray at the back of the house containing sand or fresh soil and sprinkle pepper dust on the garden where the cat fowls. Your cat will then use the litter tray, but be sure to clean the litter tray at least twice a week, your problem will be solved. Good luck!

Old people often put 3 litre coke bottles filled with water all around the garden to stop cats! I guess cats hate water or something!
either that or get a dog!

Fresh Lemon and Orange peel loosely spread between the plants. You'll have to eat alot of fruit to cover a large garden, but it smells good, WORKS like a charm and is good for your soil unlike some chemicals. Cats hate it.
I used it as potpoury on counters where I prepare food, cats wont go near.

when the cat mess in a place, it means that place is its own area. any way, cats regulary do their private works(!!) on the open air and then dig and hide the messes under soil, peper works but until it smells, and it works only in very hot months. so you should cover your garden with something undamageble. when your not there. its the best way. dont buy a dog cause they will do the same things on your garden but dont dig it and laying it smells!!! :)

There are cat repellants sold at places like Home Depot or Lowe's, like a powder or spray, that you can buy and spread around the borders of your garden.
Please don't do anything to harm the animal. They are just doing what comes naturally which is to dig where there is loose soil. It's nothing personal against you.

Get a dog - or your own cat - they can smell each other and then tend to stay away.
You can also buy electronic gadgets which plug in and send out a high pitched noise which can only be heard by animals - they hate the noise and stay away. You can get these in B&Q and they work for things like rats as well.

You can buy an electric sensor from most pet shops, you place it in your garden and when a cat comes in the sensor lets off a high pitched sound that we cannot hear which makes kitty do a runner and it doesn't harm them.

My wife buys 5 pound bags of ground red pepper from a chinese food market and spreads it on her gardens. It seems to work for our cats, they don't go near it. But you have to reapply after heavy rains. She buys it from the chinese market because it seems to be dirt-cheap there. A 5 lb bag seems to last half a season. She spreads it with a flour sifter, and covers about 500 sq ft of area per application. Don't spread it on a windy day.
