cuts down on the "glare" of lights or sun from a flat and sweaty part of the face and keeps the glare out of the eyes. Use to be a mixture of wax and ash, now its a black piece of cloth like a bandaid...and like eveything else, companies are using it to promote products ( think "underarmour", and "NIKE")
its funny looking, but it does work even if some ballplayers take it to the extreme with the 'war face" nonsense.

Stop the light from reflecting off of the cheekbone and causing glare. You'll see the occasional baseball player wear it as well.

they used to use a form of carbon called"Carbon black" to keep out the glare. Now they have some synthetic products.
