About 5 or 6 weeks ago I started getting symptoms of cystitis. Took over-the-counter medication for it, but nothing worked.
Slowly got worse over the next week or two, drinking water and cranberry juice wasn't helping, so saw doctor and was prescribed an antibiotic- Trimethoprim.
The same evening I collapsed with severe pain in my back/side and was taken to hospital.. after many hours was diagnosed with a kidney infection, as the original UTI had spread to my bladder and into my kidney. Was taken off the Trimethoprim & put on a different, stronger antibiotic, plus two types of painkiller, Codeine & Diclofenac.
Took the antibiotics & painkillers for a week or so. The kidney pain went away but WEEKS later I'm still getting recurring UTI/cystitis symptoms. Every time I think its gone, it flares up again. The most annoying part is having a constant feeling of needing the toilet. What the hell else can I try? This is really starting to get me down, I've forgotten what normal feels like.

I've been back to the doctors twice. Have been told that they can't figure out what's going on and this may just be something I have to deal with. If thats the case I'm ready to give up because this is so frustrating and it's doing my head in.

Can sex be causing this to flare up? I don't think sex is helping the matter, but it also flares up even when I don't have sex.

It seems whatever I do this is never going to go away. AM LOSING MY PATIENCE! Every time I get my hopes up it comes back just to remind me it's still there.

sounds like it might be interstitial cystitis. check my source link, and talk to you doctors. if they don't know about it, get new doctors.

Have you been retested to be certain if there is really an infection?

Calm down honey-there is hope in alternative meds. Try baking soda and water...I had cystitis this past summer and the doctor tested me for diabetes and infections and ??????? but never cystitis which used to be diagnosed by microscopic study slide ....I also have undetermined arthritis flare ups and high BP. I am relatively young and active.
You asked if sex could be at the bottom of it...that is interesting question or statement. The answer is if he is an uncircumcised male...what this has to do with it I am not sure...
My cystitis was so bad this summer that I was getting up six times a night and finally my bladder went into spasms and being on the BP meds was afraid to take the baking soda and water for relief. I had not had a bout of cystitis in at least twelve years; before that I used to have a bout of cystitis every month or so...baking soda and water was my friend...drink more water after the soda...You have my best intentions and prayers.
The first time I got cystitis was about two weeks into our marriage and I was peeing alot plus passing blood...that got both our butts going to get me under doctor care; plus money was very not there...

i had a uti and ended up in a er and i took antibiotics for 7 days and two weeks later was running to pee every 30 minutes!
i was so mad! anyways i went to er AGAIN! and i am now on 10 days and two pills a day. i needed to be on the antibiotics longer. maybe that is what you need to do. keep up with the water but NO cranberry juice cuz that can be irritating your bladder! good luck. i know how you feel.

Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic from aminopenicillin group. Its mechanism of action is anti-bacterial and consists in inhibition of construction of bacteria cell walls sensitive to Ampicillin. It is not destroyed in acidic content of stomach, is easily absorbed. Ampicillin is active toward gram positive microorganisms and also some gram negative ones (salmonella, schigella, proteus, E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, formerly called Pfeiffer's bacillus) and is used for treatment of the diseased provoked by mixed bacteria. Microorganisms producing penicillase are resistible to Ampicillin. This medication is used to treat pneumonia and other infectious diseases of respiratory, urogenital, gastrointestinal systems.

Its time to see a specialist. Try mayoclinic.com and see if they can shed some light on your problem. If the condition is chronic, you need to find some coping strategies. Don't let your doctors get away with I don't know.

I'm sure there are tests they can do that they have not done yet. Don't give up, I know its frustrating. Good luck.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.
