Not in the car, on the beach, or on the streets, or in a tent. Sorry.

Mrytle Beach in May ?

You fall in between the Spring Break season and the Summer Vacation season. So rates, although not at their cheapest, should be below peak.

Now "Good" and "Cheap" together are a little difficult to find. If you're not set on staying right on the beach, you should be able to find a decent rate at the mid scale motels. These would be several blocks off of the beach itself. Like the previous guy mentioned - start with Travelocity, Expedia, Hotels.com, etc. My suggestion is to go with hotel ratings of at least a '2' or above. Let's face it, all these places get beat up with large families squeezing into one room, dragging sand and dirt with them.
The better managed properties keep them maintained well.
Or go straight to hotel websites.
But don't hesitate if you know the dates, because even May books early.

Good Luck and safe trip.

I stayed in October at the Fairfield INN about .5 mile from the beach. It was 99.00 a night plus free breakfast. There are SO many hotels there. The food there is really expensive.

Many of the condos in N. Myrtle are beachfront. If you're going with friends, staying a while (3+ days) and can split the costs, condos are your best bets. Lock in now, because when the weather gets warm, they book up fast, and sometimes up their prices from the previous season.

There are smaller hotels such as Motel 6 and so on in Myrtle Beach. They won't be too much.
