1. Born on the same day as Abraham Lincoln.
2. Grandfather on his father's side was Erasmus Darwin, very well known as a doctor around Birmingham and throughout England in the mid to late 18th century. Erasmus wrote reams of verse setting out the scientific knowledge of the day.
3. Grandfather on his mother's side was Josiah Wedgwood, the pioneering potter who introduced several new types of potting clay in a variety of natural colours. Famous in his time for copying the ancient "Portland Vase" and providing dinner services to Catherine the Great of Russia and the English Royal family. Also introduced the familiar pottery with white classical figures on a blue base. Both grandfathers knew James Watt, Matthew Boulton and even Benjamin Franklin. Search the "Birmingham Lunar Society" for more information.
4. Though initially intending to become an Anglican minister, Charles Darwin turned to the study of natural philosophy or science as it was beginning to be called.
5. He sailed round the world with Captain Fitzroy aboard the "Beagle" on a scientific mission stopping at many places along the way. Visited Australia in 1839. The city of Darwin at the northern coast of the Northern Territory is named for him though I do not think he landed there. A channel near Cape Horn in South America is named the "Beagle" channel, while a river in Australia is named for Captain Fitzroy. Most famous visit was to the Galapagos Islands.
6. After his return to England he began to formulate his theory of evolution through natural selection. Central to the theory was the realisation over the previous 100 years that the Earth was tens of thousands to millions of times older than had previously been thought. Other important factors were the writings of Thomas Malthus, the successful classifications of plant and animal species by 18th and 19th century scientists and the observation that human selective breeding of livestock had radically changed some animals in just a few decades.
7. Though he had formulated the theory quite early on, he was reluctant to publish because of the religious implications among other things. However he was visited by another naturalist called Wallace who had come to exactly the same conclusions and wanted to discuss the matter with him. The initial publication was a joint effort. The "Wallace Line" runs between Australia and New Guinea on the one side and Indonesia on the other and delineates the south western limit of (among other things) large placental mammals. One the Australian side the large mammals are all marsupials.
8. Though the theory was held to be satisfactory, it lacked a mechanism through which it could work. This mechanism was not elucidated until the genetic work of Grigor Mendel became more widely known about 1900. Eventually mathematical statistics showed that the results obtained by Mendel and others were consistent with Darwin's theory. From that time on his theory has been regarded as being confirmed.
9. While the theory has been subject to some modification, even by Darwin himself as better and more knowledge has come to hand, it is still regarded as fundamentally correct.
10. Darwin did not resile from the theory on his deathbed.
