There are lots of different types of horror. 'Fantastic horrors' (like Edgar Allan Poe's works) usually take place in this world and involve nice, ordinary people who confront supernatural horrors. 'Scientific horror' is like a cross between science fiction and horror. As said above, the Alien movies are a good example of the characteristics of the genre. 'General, mundane horror' is rooted in real life and usually involves some kind of psycho killer. The Halloween movies and Texas Chainsaw Massacre are good examples. Then there's 'Amusing horror' which isn't meant to be serious and generally has exaggerated elements that make fun of the genre as a whole. Think Scary Movie. As in all genres there are many types of horror. some have already been mentioned.
Monsters are a genre that seems to be loosing steam right now (vampires, were-wolfs, etc) but still has a following.(Ann Rice)
The physiological horror brings out the fears most people experience to some degree (snakes, spiders, roaches, rats, things that go bump in the night, etc) many made into "B" horror films and some put into print by Stephen King and Wes Craven among others.
Ghosts stories can be horror, or not.
There are also many cross genre stories. Horror/romance (yes romance), Horror/mystery, Horror/suspense, Historic Horror. Even stories about the real monsters of our times and the past, are horror stories.
A story doesn't have to be a slasher/blood letting, it just has to have an element in it that makes you suck in air, open your eyes wide, and remember that "it's okay, I'm safe." or are you???

Anything that is ab-normal or is beyond scary, like a dead person eating someones guts out or an alien harvesting someone to eat them alive later, or someone being embalmed while still alive. There are a number of different things that could be described as horror. The movie "Alien" or "Alien's" is a good example of horror and suspense combined.
