OK let me elaborate a bit. I recently moved to a gulf country not a gulf state as in USA.
Job opps in my field are very limited here. So I was really glad one of the three companies in my field here (and the biggest one at that) offered me a job.
But I am in a junior position with barely any responsibilities. I send out faxes and make phone calls – which is not part of the job description but I’m ok with it, but even that takes just an hour or so per day.
The rest of the time I can do anything as long as I’m at my desk and look busy. And there’s no fear of getting fired coz everyone else is also totally under-employed. They don’t seem to mind, but I do!
I don’t need the money desperately, so quitting is an option. Still, I’d like to hear other points of view as well.

If you are a recent graduate OR it is a quickly evolving field, then experience is more valuable than money in your case. Keeping this position for an extended time may hurt your chances at real work in your field if other job candidates have real experience in your field.
If you already have real world experience in your field and it is not a quickly evolving one, then consider "coasting" for as long as you're comfortable. If they aren't paying you to do something close to nothing then they will be paying somebody else to fill your seat.

I am very curious to know if your employer does "work" for the US government.

yeah quit! please! i think that it's neccessary to, since you know what you want (which is NOT a job in which you're under employed and doing nothing in... and more, of course. but i think it's good that you know what you want...), you've got ambition so you can totally try out other things and go for it and succeed and blah and what if the older you get, you regret not quitting?

i'm young still and i don't know very well exactly what job i want, what suits me and blah. but i do know i'd want to be doing something i have passion for, something that excites me, gives me risks and stuff. you know, living. so for me now, i will not settle for a job that gives me unsatisfaction. i want to make full use of my life and do stuff and succeed, earn lots of money, meet new lots of new people, climb promotional ladders... so i know if i feel that a job is unsatisfactory, i will not stay with it and waste away my life. i want to work, but not working for something i'm unpassionate about...

btw i read something about wanting to quit your job before, and i do remember it says that you could search for another job while still staying in your current job. if you're insecure about making a wrong decision (like, end up jobless your whole entire life if you quit this last chance of a job), then you should probably have a plan... a flexible plan first. then quit.

well if u dont need the money then quit. however, since other jobs in the area arent in ur field then u will either have to move to find another job (if it comes to needing money again) or u will have to beg ur way back into ur job that u have now (which depends on bridges u burn and doing the same thing with less respect the next time around)

well you have to ask yourself the following!
do you have another job lined up? if yes then quit and go there
if not then i would stay there untill another job opens up!
you could ask for more money but i see money is the reason your quitting and if that's the case a little bit is better then none!
Well good luck!
