Yes. A person can be intorlerant on any subject yet be polite about it and not resort to ranting and raving. Many politicians, past & present, have had this ability. Racism & religion especially come to mind. I've been politely told by Jehovah's Witnesses that I was going to Hell because of my views. They showed an intolerance for my views but were very polite about it.

I believe it is possible to be intolerant of ignorance and polite at the same time.

No. By definition, "intolerant" is someone who doesn't tolerate things. If you don't tolerate it, you won't allow someone to do it (or BE it, as the case may be) . You make a fuss, get angry, walk away, ignore the person altogether - none of these things are polite. I would say, however, that it is possible to disagree and be polite.

To be intolerant would mean you not only cannot accept the thing in question but it actually agitates you in some way & you strongly need to protest.
Polite words & gestures in this situation will be seen through as a farce.

Politeness is a moral quality and a very nice attribute.
Intolerance is a lack or of quality. It is considered bad.
In order for them to coexist one would have to be a hypocrite to some degree.

Sure. You can keep nasty opinions to yourself, and be polite on the surface. As Miss Manners once wrote, manners have to do with how you act in public, not how you think or what you do alone. If you want to pick your nose when you're by yourself, that's your business.

Sure, it's called respect. You don't have to agree with things people do, still you accept them as people. Everybody makes mistakes, right? (I'm like that too...) ;-)
Take care.
