It was like a refugee camp except it was fun. There weren't enough facilities of any kind or enough food. It rained and the place turned into a sea of mud. But people pulled together for the most part and shared what they had.

I was there and if you can wait a day or so i will be more than happy to tell you what it was like.
In the meantime, get a copy of the CD and listen to it. Get the one that has the couple on the cover who are wrapped in a sleeping bag bag w/ a pinkish trim. They are standing in a field of debris. Try Amazon
You should also try to rent the movie- same cover . In addition you should also rent the movie Dirty Dancing to get a feel for the time and the milieu that the festival was plopped down into the middle of.
The area that Woodstock happened in is what is locally refered to as the "Borscht Belt " which centered in Monticello NY. Because of all the legal discrimination against Jews at the time Jews were forced by sheer necessity to create resort and recreation community's where they could take vacations and enjoy themselves and their culture in safety.
There is a Jewish tradition for tolerance and a Jewish dislike of those who would discriminate against others. When a half a million mostly toasted young people invade your bucolic world and upset the rhythms of your life you have two choices : you can respond in a hostile and negative manner and make things worse or you can respond in a tolerant helpful manner and make things better.
Those of us who survived Woodstock owe many thanks to the locals for being helpful and as tolerant as they were in our time of need.
btw when do you need this ?

It was a giant outdoor rock concert thrown over several days on a rural farm near Woodstock, New York, in the summer of 1969. Today we view it as the high point of the "hippie" or counter culture movement of the time period 1963-1974 which we call "The 60's." Because of it's legendary status, millions of people (including many not even born) claim to have "been there."

Woodstock, i think that was the time of hippy, anyway the young people wanted to be free in express themselvs in any way of the life contest. I was not born, but reading a lot, watching a lot of films, even documetaries. I created my Idea about your question.

It can be seen as one of the peaks in music history. It gathered not only lots of people, but mainly represents the way a generation saw things (at least for some time) Sadly I was not there, almost born by then but not yet.

I wish I was there. I would have enjoyed seeing the girls running around naked on LSD.
