the first semprons released where not 64bit however when intel made the celeron 64bit capable AMD went ahead and enabled 64bit in the sempron also. As for being faster than the athlon xp. yeah the athlon xp is based on the "K7" architecture the sempron is based on the "K8" architecture that is vastly improved.

Yes it does support 64 bit technology. Now 64 bit technology is not the magic performance pill that everyone seems to think it is, like the first guy, in fact if you are not using a 64 bit operating system then it really doesn't matter anyway. The Sempron in this case is faster. The reason being it uses the much faster HyperTransport system as opposed to the Athlon XP which has a very slow front side bus.

The Athlon will run 32 bit just as well as 64 bit, and it can use linux and it is excellent at gaming. There are actually two model 4000, the athlon 64 and atlon 64 x2, which is dual core. The single core version is 2.6ghz and the dual core has dual 2.2ghz cores. I looked through all the benchmarks at Toms hardware charts for you and I found that in almost every case both of the 4000s beat the crap out of the pentium d. I would definitely go with the amd over the intel in this case.

I'd be less concerned with the GHz rating...if it's a 64-bit, it's going to out-perform an Athlon 2600.

The Semperon is equivalent to the Celeron on Intel's side, if I remember right. It has little to no cache on die. The Athlon is generally the better chip with the cache built right into the chip. I am not sure the Semperon is 64 bit. Do a search on AMDs site on Semperon and you will find something.
