It depends on the family member and your relationship with them.
I always buy my brother a gift even though I haven't received anything from him in more than 20 years. I always call him on his birthday too. I love my brother and I know he loves me and it makes me happy to give to him.
If giving to these people makes you feel drained and unhappy then I wouldn't do it anymore and just go with a card. If they do something that really hurts you, then I wouldn't even do that much.
15 years ago I moved away from the valley where my family has lived for 6 generations and no one has ever visited me. I live about 1,500 miles from them and they've even come to the town where I live (for a week!) and not bothered to call me, so I wrote them off and they don't even get a card at Christmas.

i am in the same predicament you are alot of my family does not call or at least send a card or something on holidays and birthdays, but i still just send a card every year(not all their birthdays though but i always send Christmas cards),anyway you don't have to pick out specific gifts for everyone just send them a little card and say something nice, there still family.

when giving a gift, you you should never expect one in return. you're missing out on the true spirit of gift-giving! that's not the sentiment behind it. you give a gift to bring joy and because you were thinking about that person. If giving family members gifts doesn't make you feel good, then don't do it. Just send your cards wishing them a happy holidays.

If it just feels like something you HAVE to do, and don't enjoy it...or it puts a financial burden on you....just send a card. Christmas isn't about gifts....it's about Jesus....seems too many people have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas. Do what you feel in your heart is right.

Send a card for a couple of years and then forget about them if they don't remember.

It is said that it's better to give than receive but when you are the only giver it starts to hurt. Just give cards this year and see what
happens after that.
