I have read - and told by my dr- that you are not supossed to do exercises that make you lay on your back...and that sit ups put a lot of strain on the muscles and that could trigger contractions. Just do other kind of exercise, it's ok to walk, ride bike, pilates, stretching, low impact aerobics....

The human. FEMALE, body ( lol ) was made to be a safe place for baby.. I would still be careful though, you very well could be cutting off circulation, and I know when I do crunches I tend to forget to breathe all of the time, and thats not good either. I was also told by my obgyn that you dont want to increase the work out your were already doing... just keep it at the same pace you were before.. I would ask your doctor to see how she feels about you doing crunches or any other workout for that matter, only because you might have some issues with your pregnancy that might suggest you NOT overworking yourself....hope this helped congrats and good luck !

I have an 8 month old and I did crunches during my pregnancy I just made sure I wasn't on my back for more then five minutes during my second and third trimesters. I continued exercising after I gave birth and my abs are a lot stronger now then after my first pregnancy.

Walking is the best thing you can do. I don't know how any woman would want to do crunches...my tummy muscles feel exhausted enough as it is. Walking is also good for your abdominals w/out putting any pressure on the fetus. I don't know about anyone else...but the further along I get, the less I can even bend over w/out making the baby squirm around because I'm squishing her. Much less even trying to lay on my back!!!!

During my first pregnancy I was cautioned against this during the second and 3rd trimesters. I think it's OK during your first trimester, if you have previously been doing them.
However, I'd call your OBGYN and ask them to be sure.
