I understand that virsu detectors like AVG are to eliminate viruses. My question is really asking if I load something like AVG or Norton will this PREVENT virus' from attacking my computer?

Don't understand what you mean by anti-IM software. If you don't want to use chat software then don't install it... Some anti-virus programs do protect IM programs like Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger but it's typically a feature you have to pay for.

Anyway, as for free versions, the feature you want to be looking for is something called "real-time scanning". That means that when you try and open a file that can hypothetically carry a virus, the anti-virus software checks it out first (very quickly) and either allows it to open or tells you it's infected.

Not many free anti-virus programs have that facility but AVG Free Edition does. It ain't a pretty program but it does the job.

(Edit)
No, no anti-virus software will stop your computer getting a virus but if it's updated regularly (critical!!!) then a realtime scanner should stop a virus before it does any harm.

But obviously the most critical piece of advice is user-beware. Don't open email attachments from people you don't trust or attachments you didn't expect ("Hi! I found this cool screensaver, check it out!" for example). And don't open program files downloaded from limewire, etc!

I can give a few links that offer free virus and spyware removers...!You may be having a virus or spyware installed on your PC. Norton, AVG , Avast are free antivirus software. Ad-aware, Ewido are free spyware removers. You can download free softwares at

i think of McAfee is the final anti-virus. Norton slows the computer down too plenty. As for the final loose anti-virus, i myself have not tried it so i won't remark on it. yet advert-conscious is a sturdy loose undercover agent ware removing application.

No, Antivirus Programs do not prevent you from getting virus--they are there to get rid of or let you know you have a "Virus attack". Viruses come from many sources--they are unpredictable.

anti virus software prevents and removes viruses.

Best ones to get are avast and adaware (will not prevent, just remove). if you want to prevent spyware, you are going to have to pay for that. no good free ones.

i believe it does. i personally have norton so it automatically detects any rogue spyware/viruses. download "spyware blaster". it monitors your internet and computer for any spyware from downloading. and it's FREE!!
