Retarded means "delayed". For example, if the timing on an engine is delayed it is said to be retarded. Now, people call me retarded, too, but I am not an engine. I think they mean "slow", because usually they use the term along with such words as "idiot", "stupid", and "moron". I have gradually figured out that they are using those words to describe me, and not an engine.

Retarded used to be the way someone was described if they had an intellectual disability. I think it literally means held back or slowed down.
