Okay - I've had a particular guitar for about 6 months now, and I can see some fret wear. I don'w know if the frets are getting ground down a lot, or if the strings are just rubbing the oxide off the top of the fret.

How long does it normally take for a guitar's frets to need replacement? They're jumbo frets, and I do a fair bit of bending and vibrato.

If you paid less than $300 for the guitar it probably has brass frets. Brass wears very quickly. Better quality guitars use nickel silver.

On the other hand, fret wear usually presents itself as "dents" instead of just shiny spots. You don't need to have the frets resurfaced or replaced until you start to notice string buzz.

You can pick up a can of metal polisher, called Never Dull. It is hard to wear out frets, so either it is really old guitar, or you have been playing the hell out of it. To replace the frets is rather expensive. If you think it is bad enough to get the guitar referred you should consider just getting a new neck all together, it would be cheaper in the end. The Never Dull comes in a can, its usually in the Automotive Department, polish the frets with Never Dull, it should play like new. You can clean everything metal on the guitar with Never Dull, also wet your finger board down with Windex to get all the gunk off, Windex is a great guitar polish! Good Luck I hope this was useful!! Keep on Jammin'!

i guess its goin to have to depend on how hard you press, and what guage and brand of strings you're using. all guitar's have fret wear, and its probably just rubbing the oxide off the top. you're probably using light grade strings, i would suggest getting some elixir strings. they have a nanoweb nylon coating wound around them. they are o so nice to play, the action is so much better, its easier to slide barre chords and pick a lead, they are easy on your fingers, they last longer, and they will protect your fretboard. they cost like $20, but they are worth it, i will never buy another set of strings again.

depends on the guitar, i play mine every day, and there is no wear, my Fender i've had for 6 years and no wear, something sounds wrong, try adjusting the height of the strings, it could be easier on the frets.
