Do you mean "cause"? There are many components to consider - more details required - what kind of car - when does it run hot? Way too vague, my friend.

If you're asking about causes, it could be several things
Insufficient coolant in system
Drivebelt bad or broke
Radiator core blocked or the air flow thru rad is restricted by dirt, trash, etc.
Bad thermostat
Cooling fan not operating correctly
Bad water pump/ restricted coolant flow
Bad radiator cap
The temperature gauge could be bad

If you're asking about the costs associated with an overheated engine, it's hard to say without a complete check of the engine. You could have warped/cracked heads, engine block, numerous things.It could be very expensive. Running an engine hot is very, very bad on the engine.
