Yet it doesnt show signs of acidity, i.e. there is no discoloration of basins or tubs and no corrosion evident anywhere. Can water have a low ph without being acidic ?

A ph of 5. isnt really that extreme. I woulnt expect any corrosion. The slight acidity of you water could be due to dissolved carbon dioxide (this is what gives coca cola a ph of 2.5). Maybe you could read a higher value if you removed the dissolved gas (for instance by heating).

Beware, things can go wrong at times..it might be the type of of metail used to make the basin.please no matter what happens dont drink the water, cos it might harm u not withstanding the absence of known symtoms..

However, it is possible that your tester is sensible to some trace element that makes it give a false reading. Different types of testers are sensible to different trace elements.
