I don't know a whole lot about the continent as a whole, but I did read a book about Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, the lead up of which explained reasons that the natives came on hard times during the time that Europeans were settling part of the country. As I recall, land "ownership" was informal by the natives. The whites came in and "bought" much of the best tracts of land, although the natives who entered in to such agreements were not familiar with that concept and thought that they were just sharing or renting. Then when they tried to use the land that should have been theirs again, the whites refused. Basically the whites imposed an unfamiliar set of laws on the natives that denied them their livelihood. And if they didn't confirm to these white men's laws, then that was additional proof that they were innately savages. So you ended up with a lot of natives working the land that they had previously owned for a pittance, and only being given small, unfertile parts to put their own gardens. That put them at risk for poverty and starvation. I would assume that starvation would then make them more susceptible to illness, plus exposure to the European settlers would have exposed them to diseases that they had not yet built up immunity for.

There was no CNN then.
You may have heard of "If it bleeds, it leads"? News channels tend to dwell on the bad parts to make you feel a little better about your own lives. I've lived in Africa for thirty-five years and have never actually seen any of the things that feature so prominently on the news.
Millions of us wake up in the morning, drive our well fed, unraped children to school and go to work. Then we go home to sleep in our comfortable beds, but you will never hear of us on BBC. For them a rich African is represented by a man with two cows and four wives who live in a mud hut. And that makes you feel a whole lot better about being American doesn't it?

some white guy discovered their land and decided because they didnt look, dress or think like him they should be his slaves and he should change their unchristian barbaric ways (as if). then he took all our wealth, cows and claimed this land as his own and decided to make it too intricate for our fore fathers to get and denuded them of the necessary education to deal with what he had made of it now. though Kings like Shaka and Moshoeshoe fought long and hard, they couldnt battle against foreign weaponery. different clans lived in peace, everyone was entlitled to land and freedom. they werent drawn into the complexity and politics of white man. the only crimes were other clans stealing cows or family feuds (who doesnt have that).

they had no need for all that wasnt theirs... especially to be enslaved within their own home by an invader treated like aliens by an invader as well.... thats why all was well back then. now times have changed and they've been for so long oppressed, denuded of education, wealth and humane rights... denuded of all the tools that could have helped them survive this pandemic and lead normal lives.

thank you.

Youve practically answered your own question.
Because ages ago the african continent was still plush and not as arid as today, it was a haven for humankind.
Today other factors come in, such as migration (causing entry of diseases they are unimmune to), weather disturbances, political climate (civil war) etc.

They weren't. It's always been a brutal place where people died in tribal war. Now we crowd them into cities where they die in equally large numbers but in one place. Cities concentrate a lot of the misery. Then we have CNN to show it to us when we would just ignore it in the past.....Thank you CNN
