Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, Santy, Jolly Old Elf, Santa Klaus or simply Santa, is a gift-giving figure in various cultures who distributes presents to children and adults, traditionally during the night of December 24, Christmas Eve, while everyone is sleeping. The popular American form Santa Claus originated as a mispronunciation of Dutch Sinterklaas, which is a contracted form of Sint Nicolaas (Saint Nicholas).

The original Santa was Nikolaus of Myra, a town in Asia Minor, he was a bishop there and became a catholic saint. His feast, on the 6th December, is still a day to give presents to children in Central Europe.
There are many legends about St Nicolas, among others that he provided a poor girl with a dowry, and that he saved a boy from drowning, and the latter made him patron saint of seafarers.

I'm not sure how many names he has had. I am sure each country has a different way to pronounce his name.

Obviously nobody ever existed who could travel around the world at infinite speeds throwing toys down the chimneys of rich kids.
Saint Nicholas is one suggestion of where the myth comes from but there are a variety of theories. I'd recommend a web search but theres a wonderful book called the 'science of christmas' which makes for good reading this time of year.

Our present day Santa is based on Nicolas, a bishop of Myrna in Lycia, now part of modern day Turkey. Nicolas became a saint for his extraordinary love of and generousity to children and the poor.
