I took a class at my college for illustrator cs2 and id say i did 4 hours a day for 3 days out of the week and finished it in about 1 month. The book we used is called "adobe illustrator cs2 class room in a book".
Shows you the basics and is very easy to read and comprehend.

At my school we learned the all of them from photoshop to illustrator, to in design with the same kind of book. gl

If you know your way around a computer then you can probably work out most of it by pressing F1. It's one of those programs that takes minutes to understand but a lifetime to truly master - try the F1 help and any online tutorials before spending anything on books - you may well not need them.

There is a great book entitles Illustrator 10 Bible. It is very comprehensive, and will take a while to work through. However, it will certainly be time well spent.

Best option is to use the built in Help, as this includes a step by step guide while giving you experience.
