I found one water bug (it looks exactly like the pics I've seen on here) in my bedroom of all places on the ceiling. I also found one a few weeks back under my dresser just a few days after we moved into our new house. Other than that, I haven't seen any others. Should I call an exterminator or just deal with the occasional shock of a huge bug in my bedroom? I have a crawling baby and pets so I am afraid to use pesticides in my home.

You probably have a moisture problem that is attracting these bugs. Bugs need food and shelter. The inner workings of houses are ideal conditions because they are very well sheltered and can grow colonies in the hundreds of thousands and destroy your house. (They don't care - they can easily move next door.)

Get a home inspection from someone that specializes in WDI/WDO (wood destroying insects/organisms) and mold. If there is a moisture problem, he/she should be able to find it and tell you what you exactly need to do from there. Good luck.

Hate to tell you this but if you have one you have hundreds. It's not just one that you are seeing. I would call an exterminator or you will never be able to get rid of them.
Water bugs live around moisture so you might check around and see where they might be coming in at.
