Christopher Gardner. The new Will Smith movie, Pursuit of Happyness, is based on his life. He was homeless and one day he met some guy on Wall Street and asked him what he did that he could afford to drive a Ferrari. The guy was a stock broker. Andrew Carnegie is a famous example of someone who worked his way up from nothing. Babe Ruth was the son of a very poor family, who was raised (and got his start in baseball) in an orphanage. Jack Kent Cook, who was the owner of the Redskins football league for many years, grew up very poor during the Depression. He was the son of a single mother, and he said that the proudest moment of his life, even considering his Superbowl championships, came at 14 years of age when he presented his mother with $24 when she needed $2.50 to keep the phone bill from being cut off. He raised it by selling encyclopedias. Oprah Winfrey was the child of unmarried teenagers and grew up in rural poverty, before becoming one of the most successful television personalities.
