The " R " is for reference

Accounitng in oledn days used to be manual...imagine doing bundles of accounting work with hand, with ink pen. So why not save some space, ink and work by shortening Debit into Dr. Why 'r' and not 't', may be because its opposite of credit whose short is Cr.

Well the first accountant was an Italian monk in the 14th century. The Latin for debit it is debere, shortened to Dr.

Just a thought.
