Start a clipping file. rip the covers off. Get a razor blade and cut them apart . Take out any aticles that have interesting information . File them . Collect photos and charts. Reduce them to what intrests you. Do this only with recent ones. The Ridpath's is staying intact. The etchings are masterpieces, weigh a ton and someday will be re-bound. Some of the older encyclopedias have information that is now repressed. Libraries are destroying our intellectual history. So mind well what you toss. Think about the future.Your great grandchildren might want to know what it was like back when there was oil.

Ebay, they could be worth a tidy sum. Probably don't donate the a charity shop unless you're clear to them that they should fetch a good price (my mum works in a shop and they were going to chuck a set away cos they thought they were worthless, they don't always know what they're doing!).

Sell them on eBay as '70s memorabilia or give your heart a lift and donate them to charity. I'm sure there will be a children's home that could use them. Alternatively, they could sell the encyclopaedias and use the money themselves.

You could make a sort of focal point out of them by stacking them up to make a book shelf or something.
Or you could shove them in an inaccessible place in your house so that when you find them in 30 years or so they will be collector's items and sell them for lots and lots of money.

That could be a collectors item. Try finding an antiques book dealer or on Ebay. Someone might want them.

Big old encyclopedias are really useful! As bookends, doorstops, shelf-supporters (just stack two piles up and put a plank of wood across), paperweights (for very large piles of paper), steps (if you pile them strategically), stands (for lamps etc), secret wallets (to hide emergency money inside), you name it!

Two choices:

Use them to get loads of best answers :)

or if you want to get rid, Freecycle them. Find your local group and post a message with the subject "OFFER: Encyclopaedias"

Someone who needs them will take them from you in no time :)

Do you have kids? You could use them to raise up the head of their mattresses when they have a cold.

Or you could stick all the pages together with glue and hollow them out - to keep guns, drugs in etc.

Libraries collect old Encyclopaedias. You may donate or sale to the libraries.
