I keep hearing about the womans' right to control her body, but these arguments completely discount the life of the fetus. Is it they believe it's not alive? Do they believe that it's not alive during the first trimester but suddenly becomes alive during the second? What about full term abortions?

I also hear much misapplying Roe v Wade. That case had nothing to do with life of a fetus and everything to do with the right to privacy so lets leave that out please.

I'm sorry. The scope of abortion in general makes this forum pretty much useless... I'm trying to center on the "right to control her body" argument in particular. I don't understand this argument unless it completely discounts the fetus as being alive. And if so, at what point do they think it becomes alive?

To answer the landlord/tenant argument...
The landlord may have the right to evict the tenant, but he does not have the right to shot the tenant. That is what an abortion does.
There are alternatives such as adoption. In most states the mother can even receive the "back rent" and other compensation from the new parents for her expenses.
But no one has the right to kill another human being for mere convenience.

The problem doesnt rest with abortion exactly. The only way to find the true answer is to look at the fundimental problems. I personally believe that the problem lies in the way the human brain functions. The human culture has taught the brain to work with definates. There is ALWAYS a clear line. Things are either black, or white, night or day, wrong or right; but in nature things RARELY work that way. usually things are one thing then eventually BECOME something else with no definate clear line.
The question you are bringing up as the fetus not being alive for the first trimester, then alive all of a sudden in the second is just that. It is like asking is it daytime at five fifty five, and night time at six pm? When is night time exactly? The sun doesn't just appear in the sky, it is daytime, and slowly evolves into night... the same can be said with the fetus.
If you look at things from this perspective you will find that almost everything is on a slippery slope. For instance how many times have you been in a conversation where someone has said " We need to find someplace to draw the line"? This line is very good for people with hidden political agendas. The way of getting what you want is to draw the line where nobody would object to, and continually moving that line arguing continuity all the way. For example, having agreed that killing a child is "murder" is then slid back to the moment of conception. On the opposite end giving people the right to choose the news paper they want to read, you end up supporting the right to put the recipe for nerve gas on the internet. If we were less obsessed with lables and discontinuity, it would be much easier to recognize that the problem here is not where to draw the line; It is the immage of drawing a line is inappropiate. There is no sharp line, only shades of grey that merge unnoticed into eachother.

Well, you can look at it as a landlord/tenant matter. the fetus (the tenant) is occupying space in the mother's (the landlord's) body. the fetus pays no rent, yet the mother must go through great physical and financial hardship during the pregnancy. Shouldn't a landlord have the right to evict a tenant who pays no rent?

Edit- To answer the animal question, it's perfectly legal to kill an animal, any animal, so long as it is done humanely.

To answer the person who compared abortion to shooting a tenant, wouldn't a landlord who evicts a tenant in the middle of winter, rendering the tenant homeless, possibly to die of frostbite, be guilty of murder if that tenant does die?

Second edit-
I find it strange that all you anti abortion people think that outlawing abortion will somehow stop the practice. it won't. there was a time in this country when abortion was illegal. The law didn't stop abortions from happening, it just forced them underground. It also led to one of the most violent periods in our history after all those unwanted, unloved children grew up hating the world and everyone in it, because they were unwanted and unloved.

The people that argue for alternatives like adoption seem to be out of touch as well, since there are still orphanages in existence. there are thopusands of unwanted children in america, that nobody will adopt, and you're all arguing that we should add to those numbers.

the baby is alive as soon as its fertilized, they are in MOST cases being heartless. i do not believe in abortion it is murder there are lots of ppl who would kill for a child of their own. as far as full term abortion thats just sick! why would you, how could you? if you don't want to get pregnant don't have sex its that simple. the only case where its justified is if its a life or death situation. Now i'm sure ppl are now thinking what about rape and incest? Still say adoption, It is NOT that babys fault, why kill it? I'm not sure why ppl think it suddenly comes to life during the second trimester, maybe to try to justify themselves. Lets jsut fade the facts here ppl just don't care for human life any more.

well then let's look at it like a landlord/tenant. it is like owning a pet, the pet pays no rent, and the landlord must pay to feed the animal not to mention clean up after the animal without even a thank you. now it is against the law to dump an animal and you can get some hard time for killing an animal. so my question is this, does an animals have more rights than a fetus which in turn is the flesh and blood of two people?

I think a fetus is a human and I consider an abortion murder.
No matter what.
people need to wake up and be responsible for their actions
we live in a sick pleasure focused society

Don't you know the main purpose of sex?

creating other human beings!!!

if you arent capible of being responsible for you actions
you shouldn't be having sex, sex is great but you need to realize that sex causes babies.

I'm certianly glad I wasn't aborted.

I'm so tired of all these murdering sluts.

and yes I realize that rape victims become pregnant.

it's still a life that you are killing when you have an abortion.

there are to many childless couples out there that will give a baby a good life. my sister had an abortion 20 years ago. she said all they did was stick something in her and chopped the baby up then used something like a vacuum and sucked the baby out. it made me so sick to my stomach i actually had to open the car door and threw up. i haven't talked to her sense. i love children and life to much to end ones life. females should be on some kind of birth control and the men should use rubbers. the health clinics give the away free all day long.

You have a point.

I believe life starts at the moment the sperm enters the ovum.

I believe prevention is better than abortion.

BUT, I believe no one has a right to tell someone else what to do with their own body. If someone wants to have an abortion, that is their decision, not mine.

Women have a choice. They can use conraception or they can abstain. If that choice is taken from them by force, there is clearly a case for allowing an abortion.
