America originated with 13 states along the northern east coast. From the early expansion westward, people in the established cities of New York and Boston were aware from maps of the great expanse of the nation westward past the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers; past the great plains and Rocky Mountains and finally the Pacific. The term "Mid-West" was a naming convention most relevant from the this early perspective as the nation was centered along the eastern seaboard.

Another good example are the state names, Virgina and West Virginia. The east and west adjectives are relative terms. Virginia became well established. Virginians came to term the comparable unpopulated land to the west as "West Virgina" and the name stuck.
