Let's assume I'm an adult who finished high school, but for whatever reason (maybe I have a child, or I'm working three jobs, or I can't afford it) I never went to college. Also, let's assume I have no assets and no savings, I'm living in an apartment and I don't have any particular skills or abilities. If I were to look for a job, what are my chances of finding something above minimum wage? What is the highest wage/salary I could possibly hope for, if I began an entry level? What are my chances for promotion? If I were earning a minimum wage salary, and I didn't spend money on superfluous things (entertainment), would I be able to survive? Save money? Would my chances be affected if I were a minority? A female?

The area you live on depends on what entry level pay is. As for finding a job, you need to see yourself on the qualities and skills you do have. An employer would probably prefer someone with a great attitude, eagerness to learn, and ambition. Not having experience in the field doesnt always hurt you. It is easier to train an employee who doesnt have any knowledge than it is to train one who learned how to do it someplace else. Chances for promotion are on you. Always be on time, have a perfect attendance record, and let your team know you are dependable. Dont participate in office gossip, and keep a positive attitude. I think you will do fine.

As for being a minority, that will only hold you back if you let it. Two out of my three supervisors are minorities. Not because of any quotas our company had to fill, but because they work hard and know how to do their job very well.

Your chances to find something above minimum wage are pretty good, since the going market rate for unskilled labor is typically already above minimum wage.

If you're not interested in developing any skills or investing in yourself, I wouldn't expect you to ever earn too much. I know electricians, HVAC repairmen, plumbers and auto mechanics who do very well without a college education (some do better than many people I know with a college education), but even those jobs require skills that take time to learn.
