I have a p1457 engine code on and my car just started stalling. It says EVAP leak detected and tank cannot hold vacuum. A shady mechanic told me it was the charcoal cannister. Ive had the light on for a month noew and just yesterday uit started stalling. Is this going to be a difficult expensive fix?

I wish I could help, but I can't.
I can only suggest you take it to or call, a car repair shop and ask them about it. Or call a dealer of the car model and ask them.
I've not heard of a 'charcoal canister' but I don't know that much about them either.
You don't say what kind of car it is, but my daughter had a code that came up her sunfire and all they did was tighten the gas cap until it did nothing but click as they turned it and the code went away. Might want to try that and see what happens.

That code is an evaporative leak code. They call it an evaporative vent cannister - which works with a valve. Part of the function of this is to seal your fuel filler when the vehicle is running, and allow you to fill the gas when the engine is off - preventing gas splash back. These parts can corrode - they are down beside the fuel tank, exposed. Repair can be expensive, but shop around for the best price. Knowing what your problem is, is an advantage. If you don't fix it, the light cannot come on for other reasons, to forewarn you of any new problems. Bottom line - if your car is stalling, you can't afford to NOT fix it.

Sounds like you may have either bad gas, meaning there may be water in it, or, check your destributor cap, check it closely for any hair line cracks in the cap itself and the housing it sets in. Also, check you plugs and wires to see if there is any leak in them, you can do this by pulling your car into a garage or something simular, make sure it's dark inside and open your hood to see if there is an ark, and or spark coming from your engine while the car in running, if it is replace the wires, problems fixed. Also, while your working with the electrical portion of the distributor, be sure to not get any moister in the distributor itself, because that too could keep the car from even starting,so make sure of all the things I mentioned and you should be fine.
