I was just wondering if it's possible to have a false pregnancy test.
My last period was November 6, and I took the test (3 times). However, the doctor could not see the baby sack. So maybe I am not pregnant?

I had the same situation. I went last week and well the doctor couldnt see the sack. I was 5 weeks and 3 days. I had to go back yesterday for another internal ultrasound and we saw the sack. It made me feel so much better and goes to prove how much a baby can grow in 5 days. I went on my 6 week 1 day and we saw it :) How far along are you? My last period was Oct 29 so give it some time

Get the doctor to do a blood test on you. A blood test will show if you are pregnant or not 7 days following conception and is 100% accurate.

Could I have a false positive? Check out The Truth About False Positives for an in-depth look at false positives. Essentially, it is possible, but it's unlikely. If you get two lines, you're most likely pregnant. Exceptions: if you have been taking certain fertility meds with hCG, the test may be picking up the hCG from the meds and not an embryo. Also, some tests develop "positive" lines after the time limit. You should NOT read the test after the time limit (usually 10 minutes, but check the directions that came with the test.) Yes, this means you should throw the test away and NOT dig it out of the trash in three hours to see if a line magically appeared. And, if the "positive" line is gray or looks like a "dent" in the test, it is an evaporation line and not a true positive.

Lastly, if you have been pregnant recently, it's possible that the test is detecting residual hCG. However, if a pregnancy ends early on, it's unlikely that hCG will remain in your system very long, so most women have nothing to worry about here. (It's extremely common for women to conceive immediately following an early miscarriage; the body is "primed" for pregnancy, so to speak, and elevated progesterone left from the miscarriage gives the next embryo a great shot at a healthy implantation. So, most women really are detecting a new pregnancy.)

However, the more hCG you had in your system when the pregnancy ended, the longer it will take to dissipate. HPT's can even detect residual hCG for up to 6 weeks following a full-term birth. It's a possibility you should keep in mind if you get positive HPT results soon after a previous pregnancy ended.

False positives are incredibly rare but they do happen. I'm surprised the doctor did not do a blood test instead of an ultrasound. If you are pregnant, you're not far enough along to be able to see much...it's only been 2 weeks since conception!

A blood test would give a definitive answer. Ask for one.

We could see no viable baby in my egg sac at first and thought I had a blighted ovum (bad pregnancy that won't last) But am now at 21 weeks pregnant with a very healthy active little girl. I know it sucks, but this is one of those things where you just have to wait it out, have your doc do another ultrasound when you'd think you'd be about 8-10 weeks pregnant, and see what you have then. In the meantime, just in case, take the precautions you'd usually take if you were sure you were pregnant (ie: no drinking, smoking, take your prenatals) and (try) not to worry yourself over it too much. Good Luck with all

have you had a blood test? they normally are accurate, and can even tell you how far into the pregnancy you are. BUT if by anychance, a person was pregnant and somehow lost the foetus, then the blood test may still show positive since the pregnancy hormones are still present in the blood, even after a miscarriage.thats what happened to a pal.

There is always a chance for a false test. Maybe you were not as far along as you thought you were. If you feel that you are pregnant then wait and have the test done again chances are you are right you are the one that can feel what is going on inside your body.

It is possible, but rare. You could have what is called a chemical pregnancy where your body believes that you are pregnant (and starts producing the pregnancy hormones) but the fertilized egg never really grows into anything. Generally, your body will flush it out before you have symptoms, but occasionally it can take a while. If the doctor said that it was still likely that you are pregnant tho, I would believe him.

You should go to see another doctor to confirm that you are not pregnant. Echoing the opinion of someone else, they can do a blood test.

you can NOT have a false positive pregnancy test result.

A pregnancy test reacts to the pregnancy hormone in a woman called HCG. It will only read a positive result when the HCG hormone is present and the HCG hormone is only present when a woman is pregnant.

It is possible to get a false negative on a pregnancy test, and that is because the woman is so newly pregnant that there isn't enough HCG hormone to be detected.
