The best way is to enter via Mysore. Its very mush easier and the route is real dark and thick forest to be enjoyed. There are Bangalore public transport buses running between Ooty and Bangalore(via Mysore) .
It would take 6 to 7 hours from Bangalore to Ooty.
It would take 4 1/2 hrs from Mysore to Ooty. It would take 2 to 3 hours from Coimbatore to Ooty.

Good luck!

Waynad's a scenic drive - best done in the day. For Mananthawady & Thirunelli, the closest route is through the Nagarhole National Park. Road's good and recently surfaced. Flip side is that entry through the Park is restricted from 6 P.M. to 6 A.M & no two wheelers allowed. Alternatively, you can skirt around the Park through Coorg via Hunsur- Titmati- Srimangala- Kutta. Route's ok but don't take it at night unless you know it well. You won't find a soul to ask directions. You can also take the Mysore - Mananthawady via H.D. Kote & Kabini. Last did this route on bike in March 07. 20 odd km before the Kerala border was hardly surfaced. Had a real tough time. Heard recently that road repair was in progress. Take this route if u r adventurous and have a good capable all wheel drive vehicle. Check latest status from the pvt buses plying from Mysore bus stand. For Sultan Bathery, take the Mysore - Ooty road till Gundulpet. Turn right there. You can zip the 50 odd k.m. from Gundulpet to Sultan Bathery in less than 45 minutes. All buses to Calicut take this route. Can well be done in the night. The road's excellent but not as much fun.

From Bangalore to Ooty, the best route should be mysore, nanjangud, gundalpet and Ooty. Should take around 7 hours to travel.
From Coimbatore to Ooty, the road is unpredictable because of land slides in ghat sections.

Bangalore to Ooty via Mysore, Bandiput and Gudalur is 252 Kms. But the Road from Gudalur to Ooty is very bad due to rains and bad maintenance. But there is shorter and better road from Bandipur to Ooty via Masanagudi, which has about 30 hairpin bends, it needs careful driving.
