Both! Because I love to spend time with family (don't get me wrong), but I also love to spend most of it with my boyfriend. We always have a romantic dinner and usually watch a movie afterwards. I love it!

Christmas

Originally known as Yule (hence the Yule-tide greetings and the Yule Log in the fire... etc etc etc)

A time when our ancient ancestors got together to celebrate the Winter Solstice which actually occurs on the 21st or 22nd of December. To "Bring in the New Year", because every day from that point forward the days would be longer and it would get warmer and warmer as spring approached.

Although our ancestors were killed by the early Roman Christian Church for thier views, the celebration never quite went away.

It was a time for gathering the people of the village and 'spreading the wealth' at the height of the harshest time of Winter. Large celebrations were thrown and people feasted and danced and paid homage in remembrance of those who were not lucky enough to have survived the winter so far.

So gather around the fire (a BBQ is probably good enough).
Bring plenty to eat with you and share it all around.
Tell great stories to delight the little children.
Laugh and be merry for the shortest coldest day of the year has passed and we again face the bright prospect of each day getting successively longer, brighter, and hopefully better.

The romance and joy that Christmas brings is amazing.
"And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord" (Luke 2:1-11).

The children and their anticipation for the day they can open gifts. Spending time with them doing special things like the traditional cookie baking and decorating. They won't be home forever so each year is special and we are thankful for that and so much more.

I think it's both. I love Christmas because I love giving special presents and my daughter was born on Dec 20 so she's my special little gift.

For me it's being with my family. I live a long way from them, including my children who are still both in their teens. It's nice for us all to be together for a day or two.
