If homophobic and racist jokes are not acceptable, then why are Irish jokes allowed to slip through the censor's net?

This is panning out pretty much as I had anticipated - everyone making vague comments about people being able to laugh at themselves etc. But the point I am trying to get at is, if you think Irish jokes are acceptable, then why not open season for homophobia, racism etc?

So far, only Grendle has come close to offering a reasonable argument (albeit tongue-in-cheek).

I am Scottish, by the way - do you think I may be over-sensitive to ethnic mockery?

Ah, censors, bless their flinty little hears and cracked brain-pans.
Sure, jokes on the Irish are acceptable because we Irish are naturally superior and don't take offense at the pathetic and jealous rantings of the lessers.
Now, Swedish jokes and Norwegian jokes (particularly of the Sven and Ollie variety) can be hurtful, so lay off those poor, bland, humorless Viks.
German jokes can be okay, but the Krauts won't get them.
The French will hate you for not being French, so go ahead and tell the jokes, but they won't laugh or change their opinion of you.
The Italians will laugh right along at Italian jokes. Jolly folk, the Eye-ties.
Spaniards ... are there really Spanish jokes?
Oh, and English jokes are just dull. Which is pretty appropriate. If only there were a way to make jokes with bad teeth.
But to your original question ... the Irish are saints and kings, but kindly with all, so go ahead and make your little jokes.

For some reason, people living on islands are thought of as being uneducated or stupid. The Germans have jokes about people from Ost Freisland. The Dutch have jokes about the English. The English have jokes about the Irish and people from Hampshire have jokes about the Isle of Wight.

I know a lot of Irish people. They tend to tell Kerryman jokes (apart from the ones from Kerry, they tell Corkman jokes)

I know one!!

How do you tell who the Irishman is in the old-folks home?

The foam is blown off the top of the bed pan!

hey! Top o' the mornin to ya! I'm Irish, so kiss my blarney stone!!

I don't know if it's racism. To me, racism would mean that one race, or culture, would get laughed at more than any other. I think as humans, we all get laughed at equally. I'd like to think so, anyway.

what is 2 miles long and has an I.Q. of 10? A St. Patty's day parade!!

ba da bum! (cymbal crash!)

Erin Go Bragh!

The Irish tell jokes about themselves because they have a good sense of humour and like to laugh. I'm sure they enjoy telling English jokes too.

A Kerry man always replies to a question with a question, as anyone knows.

Q. "How are you today?

A "Why do you ask?"

So Paddy walks into the pub and says....

Look if we keep getting offended then how are we going to enjoy our life? If its true why not say it? I'm not saying that these jokes are all real about the people they place the joke on but lighten up. Should we have no jokes instead, since all jokes are insulting to something. Its part of life and you shouldn't try to censor life.

What did St. Patrick say as he drove the snakes from Ireland?

"Are yis alright in the back lads?"

I think the Irish still have the ability, like the English do to laugh at themselves, without getting pissy about it.

because the irish have a sence of humour.
And if jokes where meant to be taken seriuosly, then they wouldnt be jokes. The real jokers though are the self obsessed ones that think its all not fair. there are people in all our(the world) cultures that the jokes are actually about,we all have a jester in our packs,so why get all worked up about it.

You're jokin right?

Im sure the Irish have a good laugh at our expense and so does everyone else. Its just us English that like to lay down stupid laws, everyone can take a joke...the government being the biggest joke of all.

I know many Irish people who you would not dare to mess with. It's all in the context, and the intention of the joke. If someone's likely to be offended by it, don't say it.
