Before trying to identify a raw (uncut) diamond, you should study its geological set up. Diamond occurs commonly in ultrabasic igneous rocks and in alluvium.
Identification of diamond is not very difficult. It is the hardest substance on earth (hardness 10) and hence capable of scratching hard objects like a china clay plate or a drill rod. It is also 3.5 times heavier than water. Often octahedron crystals. It is transparent and either colourless or yellow, green or blue etc. The lustre ( light reflecting character) is always adamantine, that is very bright and shining.
Once you suspect a diamond by the above characters, you should take it to the Geology Department of your nearest university for confirmation.
