I am sure if you take it to any main banks ,they will accept it, if it is not a forgery. Try main branches in the city and not the smaller ones.

Your own bank should be able to look into it for you and may (at their discretion) replace it or change it into your local currency. They may ask to hold on to it to check it's validity but they should give you a receipt and some kind of a reference number.

There really shouldn't be a problem unless the wash involved some bleach or other chemical that has damaged the note.

As far as I know, no bank is under any obligation to issue a new note.

The responsibility lies with the person who left the money in the trousers. Prior to washing, the pockets should have been carefully checked.

If you accidentally washed your jeans with your iPod in the pocket, you wouldn't expect an Apple Store to replace it, would you?

Don't waste time and effort to exchange it. Keep it to when you travel to a euro zone country and spend it there.

I don't know the answer, but I know a man who does. Send an enquiry to Europe Direct. http://ec.europa.eu/economy_finance/contact_en.htm
