If the area of a 5*2 rectangle is to be made square,
then each side of the square must be √10 in length.

This length can be obtained from the hypotenuse of
a 3*1 rectangle, so I'm guessing that this is one cut
that needs to be done. The other side of the cut will
also be √10, so that's two sides of the square.

I did manage to cut off 4 triangles like this, which makes
the correct square when they are surrounding a 2*2
square, but unfortunately, this is 5 pieces, not 4,
but I can't seem to make any more headway.

You need to cut 1.5 off the end then cut both rectangles exacly in half, now you have you're 4 peices, two are 3.5 by 1 and 2 are 1.5 by 1, now rotate the smaller pieces 90 degrees and put them on top of the 2 bigger pieces, now you have a perfect square, 3.5 by 3.5
