A translator needs several qualities.

1. A profound knowledge of both languages.

2. Knowledge of the subject of the text, or at least the will to research any specialized vocabulary that it might contain.

3. The translator must be objective. They need to strive not to change the intention of the original writer. The translator shouldn't add or remove anything.

Translating is not an easy thing to do. You need to use all the richness of your vocabulary. You need to be creative and have high problem solving skills, but you also need to refrain yourself from adding your personal opinion.

A good translation should feel natural when read. You need to feel like it was always meant to be in that language.

The sad part is that the only people who can really appreciate a good translation, are the people who don't need it.

Good translators need to at least speak and understand both languages very well.

A good foundation is really necessary since many words cannot have the exact same meaning when translated. So a translator tries to keep the meaning as close as possible to the original text. This can only be achieved if you have a broad vocabulary.

Practice gives you a lot of experience so as much as possible try to use both languages often.

If possible, try to write the language because the translation sometimes needs to be written or sometimes the text to be translated is written.

Oh yeah, diligence is considered a plus factor.

I live and work in Japan and teach translation.

I feel that the most important qualities necessary in a translator are:

High level language skills in BOTH languages used
excellent listener
fast memory
thorough
confident

If a person is lacking in ANY of the above qualities, there is serious potential for errors.
