i worked in an abbatoir(slaughterhouse) for a while and at first the smell was awful (like stale vomit) but after a week i didn't notice it anymore. the back of a butchers shop does vary depending on the levels of hygiene kept.

the only way you can get to find out is to visit a butchers or try and remember a scent or smell you may have come across once, like the smell of a rotting animal that may have been killed in the wild or the way dustbins smell in the summer

P.S. fao Julia, you're the TW*T & reported too !

Most writers do investigations and research when writing stories and books. Sometimes they spend months or years at it by the time they are done. How about going to a butcher shop or the meat department of a local supermarket and explaining you need research for a story and ask if you can see the meat locker from the inside? This would give you the first-hand experience of the meat locker. There might be health dept regulations about letting people into meat lockers but it's worth a shot and you may get some very good descriptives for use in your story.

Go and have a sniff of a piece of meat yourself - then describe the smell . The back of a butchers shop is usually cold, tiled floor and smells of meat and wood from the chopping blocks xxxx

hmm, it's hard to describe. It's just a really raw, unpleasant smell that catches in the back of your nose

I think it would all be frozen or in refrigeration, so there wouldn't be too much of a smell at all
