I'm currently seeking the best computer for gaming. I have a good choice in mind but I thought I'd first check with you all to see what your opinions are on the subject. I'd like a DELL XPS 700 Heavy Ordnance - High Performance Gaming Machine in Special Edition Formula Red or Jet Black, but there might be something even better. I'm not able to go above US$2000 so the DELL PC might be my best bet. Oh, and please don't suggest building a PC myself since I don't really have much experience in tinkering with the inside of computers besides upgrading hardware components and changing PC cases.

Hi,
If you have an ebay account try there. alot of custom built systems are being sold so people can get money for their new systems. you can geta very good price if you have intermediate knowledge of the components. I would suggest you go for an AMD based system as you will get more bang for your buck. plus do some research on the components. specially graphix cards, processors and mobos. the difference of a single letter in the model of a graphics can mean half the performance. e.g. 8800gts & 8800gtx, if they say it is a 8800 graphics card, ask which one is it, as 8800gtx is $150-$200 more than a 8800gts. Also go for a system with one powerful graphics card instead of two mediocre ones. as you can add a graphics card later on. and, experiment with an old system to learn about building your own system and overclocking. if you want to be able to have a good system and not spend much, you should beb able to tinker with it. once you open a computer and tinker with it, you will find it unbelievably easy to build your own system. with all the info on the web you can become a system builder in no time. ONE LAST WORD OF ADVICE. IF YOU CAN, WAIT FOR THE JANUALRY SALE.

Ok, first of all, Dell owns Alienware. They are WAY overpriced and the #1 thing that they have going for them is an amazingly good ad campaign. Don't be a sucker and fall for a slick ad instead of getting what really matters: a system that is designed from the ground up to run graphics hard and fast.

The very BEST graphics system on the market, bar none, is the HP XW9300. The entire XW series was designed to be used by engineering firms and gaming companies specifically for high-end graphics and physics engines. The XW4300, XW6200, and the new XW6400 systems are all designed to run intense phystics and graphics. The XW4300 and XW6200 are better than any consumer-grade system that you can buy and you can get one for LESS than $1,000USD if you go to stupidcheapcomputers.net. But people have been brainwashed to think that if they spend $3,000USD for a mediocre system that has a slick ad campaign, that they have somehow succeeded in life. That's stupid.

Now, because you put a $2,000USD limit on your purchase, it's going to make the purchase of an XW9300 a little more difficult. The average cost of an XW9300 runs about $2,600. However, the BEST place to find ANY high-end system is www.stupidcheapcomputers.net.

I know the guys over there and they have a deal with the manufacturers so that they sell custom-built systems for LESS than you can buy it from the manufacturer yourself. They tell me that it's because they move so many units that they can buy in bulk (like Wal-Mart) and get them cheaper than their competitors. Their systems are designed to BE cool, not LOOK cool. Their systems are often ugly to look at, but beautiful to watch work.

Don't be a sucker. Don't spend a bunch of money for a consumer-grade system that has $300 of the purchase price going to pay for an ad campaign. Get what matters: computing power. If you just HAVE to have the lights and the scorpion, or whatever, on the cooling-fan grill buy it aftermarket and install it yourself for $15 instead of getting ripped off.

Okay let me clear up a few things. First, to the last guy, thank you for the advertisement, but let me clear this up, he suggested a workstation which is not meant for gaming, really, really bad answer my friend, REALLY bad answer. You wanna talk about wasting money, there would be no bigger waste then spending big bucks on a workstation for gaming, when it is not even meant to do that (workstation's are professional design systems).

Alienware is more expensive then Dell. Here is a good place to try for a gaming computer:http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/

Now as for building your own, I am not sure what you might think is involved in building one, because from what you said you already possess the skills necessary to build one.

that's a good computer for gaming... by the looks of it, it has dual graphics cards... a good dual core processor... and a decent amount of RAM. of core you would get a better one if you did build it yourself but this is OK value for money
