All depends on what you like.
Amsterdam is preferable I think, but I live there (and have lived in Rotterdam).

Amsterdam has a better economy, so the bad neighbourhoods have a better prospect. Amsterdam is also the city of advertising agencies. So it is more a "pimped" town, Rotterdam is more honest. They say Amsterdam is more anarchy, Rotterdam a workers town. Rotterdam a true harbour-town, Amsterdam a international metro-pole. Both small cities (500.000 (Rotterdam) and 700.000 inhabitants)

The centre of Amsterdam is old and very nice, the centre of Rotterdam is new, because it was bombed in WW2. So Amsterdam is definitely more beautiful.

Between Amsterdam and Rotterdam, I would say Rotterdam. If you like big places much better will be Den Haag (The Hague).

Personally I prefer smaller places like Delft, Leiden, Rijswijk or Nijmegen.

i lived in Rotterdam for 6 years and when you get to know the pubs and the people in both places i would have to say Rotterdam (Schedam) is the best place to live.

the first Dutch joke I heard was "What's the best thing in Rotterdam? - First train back to Amsterdam" - although it was told me by my "I'm not a farmer, I'm an Amsterdammer" idiot of an ex husband. So there you go!

In my opinion both are great cities. Living wise Rotterdam will have cheaper rent places and a little easier to find. It depends on what you want, but when looking for a room check www.kamernet.nl to compare prices, it's a website for room rentals. Both cities have great opportunities to go out to clubs, dining and cultural stuff.
